Spotlighting community-led sustainable development at the largest climate conference in the world
The 29th conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is this year’s formal meeting where 198 States and non-State members negociate binding decisions to address the consequences of human-cause climate change. Decisions made during this conference affect global policy on an array of environmental issues and determines how the international community as a whole will organize its collective response to the critical challenges ahead.
The event also involves the participation non-governmental organizations, which come to advocate for sustainable solutions spanning a wide range of topics from agriculture to finance.
For the first time this year, Y30 had the opportunity to send a delegation to the conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Our team’s mission was to raise awareness on the environmental challenges specific to the Yemeni context and highlight the power the community-led sustainable development.
During the event, our team had the chance to engage with decision-makers, community leaders, NGO representatives, youth advocates and environmental science experts.
Projects at the intersection of climate, biodiversity and development
Since 2017, Y30 and Y30D – its sister organization in Yemen – implemented several development projects designed to improve environmental sustainability, economic, social develpment in line with the SDGs.
The “Nurseries of Hope” and “Basins of Hope” projects conjointly address poverty, unemployment, and increase adaptation to extreme weather events. Working chiefly with rural communities, we continue to preserve the traditions of small holder farmers and aim to further boost the production of coffee as a high-value and water-efficient crop. With already 500’000 trees planted, we hope to reach 1 million thanks to the support of of partners.
