KHAIR RESTAURANTS & RENOVATION OF OLD SANA'A

KHAIR RESTAURANTS & RENOVATION OF OLD SANA'A

Yemen has been in the grip of a prolonged conflict since 2015, which has led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world. The United Nations (UN) has classified the crisis as a Level 3 system-wide humanitarian emergency, requiring the highest level of global humanitarian response. Thanks to the support of its volunteers, Y30 implements humanitarian projects in Sana’a to best meet the needs of the population.

More than 75% of the Yemeni population needs humanitarian aid, with 2/3 of the population facing food insecurity. According to the United Nations World Food Programme, 1.2 million women and 2.3 million children require treatment for acute malnutrition, and the economic slowdown has further worsened the food crisis. Humanitarian responses aimed at improving food security remain urgent and essential. In response to this crisis, Y30 has provided vital food assistance through its 2 charitable restaurants in the Musik district, one of the poorest and most densely populated areas in the city of Sana’a. Since the launch of the project in 2018, more than 3 million hot meals have been distributed, benefiting 6,000 people per day. The demand for food assistance continues to grow as families struggle to obtain basic necessities. The Khair Restaurants project has previously received valuable support, which helped sustain meal distribution efforts. These contributions allowed the project to reach more vulnerable families, ensuring that essential food aid continued to be provided during critical periods. To support this initiative, we are seeking new support to secure the resources necessary to continue meal distribution.

Restoration of Old Sana’a

Bombardment, neglect, and heavy rain destroyed historic buildings, displacing many families and threatening the Old City’s architectural heritage, which is listed as a World Heritage Site. Sana’a’s historic neighborhoods, dating back to the pre-11th century, are now more at risk. Y30 has restored 11 old houses in Sana’a’s old town since 2019, in collaboration with the Old Sana’a Protection Authority, the public heritage authority in the capital city of Sana’a. With 6,000 more to renovate, these renovations are the first step in the restoration of all buildings. This project aims  to restore 30 homes that have suffered damages or have been destroyed, offering secure and habitable dwellings for families. At the same time, the project aims to promote local employment and preserve the historic architecture of the old town of Sana’a.
